Great Bear Lodge

Great Bear Lodge is situated in
a place of outstanding natural beauty

Accessible only by air, Great Bear Lodge is situated in a place of outstanding natural beauty and was used as a base when the BBC filmed the series “Secrets of Our Living Planet”. Designed to have minimal impact on the pristine surrounding environment, this floating wilderness lodge is constructed out of wood, with power supplied by wind turbines and solar panels.

Accommodation is in 8 comfortably appointed bedrooms, featuring private ensuite bathrooms with showers. Meals prepared with fresh, seasonal local ingredients are served in the shared dining room, with a typical dinner featuring for instance, roast salmon drizzled with maple syrup and mustard seeds. There is also a communal library filled with natural history books, and in this area informative presentations are given by resident biologists.

Activities at Great Bear Lodge are geared towards bear-viewing in the aptly named Great Bear Rainforest. Two sessions are scheduled per day – one in the morning, the other in the afternoon. Excursions are tailored to observe bears at their most active, with boat trips likely in spring and summer, when bears are commonly found foraging along the estuarine grasslands for plants and berries. In autumn, observation is mostly at river blinds – timber platforms strategically set up by the best bear-fishing locations by the river. A wide array of bird and whale species are also likely to be spotted, from Bald Eagles to humpbacks.
