Ella – 98 Acres
98 Acres is a sprawling tea plantation located in Ella, a town set in Sri Lanka’s misty, temperate highlands. One of the region’s most distinctive boutique hotels, it offers accommodation in charming, chic chalets with thatched roofs, crafted out of recycled timbers and raw stone. Inside each chalet, guests can expect to find polished wooden floors, premium bedding, handcrafted furniture and rustic showers with plenty of hot water. Out on the balcony, enjoy sweeping views of the mountainous landscape that defines central Sri Lanka.
Facilities at 98 Acres include a beautiful restaurant, where Sri Lankan and a range of international dishes are served. There is also a charming bar constructed out of old railway sleepers, a fitness room, a day spa and gorgeous outdoor swimming pool surrounded by comfortable lounge chairs.
Hiking, cycling, bird-watching and archery are all possible things to do at 98 Acres. Trek up to iconic Little Adam’s Peak or Ella Rock, walk to a stunning waterfall or learn to handle a bow and arrow with the property’s in-house specialist. Other activity options include cooking classes, walking through the estate with tea pluckers, and visiting a factory to see how leaves are turned into pure Ceylon tea.

Sri Lanka Overview
Why Sri Lanka: This remarkable island off the south eastern coast of India might be small but it is jam packed with spectacular landscapes, a rich cultural heritage and ancient historical sites including 7 World Heritage Sites! Sri Lanka is also still relatively unspoilt by tourism, although there are many unique and wonderful hotels throughout the country.
When to Go: Dec – Mar is considered the best time to visit, being the driest season on the west and south coasts, in the ‘Cultural Triangle’ and up in hill country. The east coast is best from May – Sep when many of the beaches along the west and south coasts are experiencing the monsoon. During the monsoon, it is possible to travel as the rain is not constant – you’ll also enjoy lower prices and less crowds. The temperatures are high throughout the year, averaging around 27°C.
Combine With: Neighbouring India, Bhutan or Nepal.
Getting There: Fly into the international airport north of Colombo, the capital.
