Prince William Sound

Itinerary

Sample Itinerary

8 days/7 nights

Day 1

Whittier – Embarkation

The scenic drive from Anchorage (approx. 1h15 mins) will take you through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel (at 2.5 miles, the longest highway tunnel in North America) to Whittier – the gateway to Prince William Sound. After meeting your crew and a safety briefing, tour the Safari Explorer, an intimate 36-passenger vessel and your home for the week. Toast your voyage with champagne on deck. D

Day 2

Icy Bay Glaciers

This morning, wake up to the glacial waterways of Icy Bay. Flowing down from the 4,000 foot surrounding peaks, Chenega, Tigertail, and Tiger glaciers are all options this morning. Hop in a skiff, and if conditions are right, kayak in a remote cove tucked into the shoreline. Your expedition team will talk to you about how glaciers sculpt and alter the landscape on a daily basis. Feel the essence of this land of the Chenega people, meaning “beneath the mountain,” as you weave through deserted islands by kayak, skiff, and yacht. B L D

Day 3

Captain’s Choice

Today, tuck into the southern reaches of Prince William Sound, exploring its beautiful, sculpted islands. Nose your way from cove to cove, keeping an eye out for whales, seals, sea lions, and seabirds from the bow or kayak. Alternatively beachcomb for a closer look at island life with your guide and learn about natural and cultural history. B L D

Day 4

Cordova

Accompanied by guides, head out for a hike below Sheridan Glacier this morning. In the afternoon, explore Cordova on your own, or join your fellow passengers on a walking tour of this tiny fishing town at the mouth of the Copper River. With a population of 2,300 and no roads connecting to other towns, Cordova is only accessible by air or water. You can take in the town’s Native history on a nature walk, hike, an Eyak Tribe cultural program, or a visit to the Prince William Sound Science Centre, before settling back on board for a quiet overnight. B L D

Day 5

Columbia Glacier & Valdes

There are options aplenty this morning; hike, kayak, skiff, or try your hand at stand-up paddle boarding in a quiet cove before a hearty lunch back onboard. In the afternoon, explore towering icebergs born from the approaching Columbia Glacier. Winding its way 32 miles back through the Chugach Mountains and with constantly changing conditions, your captain finds the best route to view this massive glacier. B L D

Day 6

Unakwik Inlet & Meares Glacier

Grab a kayak this morning and paddle the waters of Unakwik Inlet, with the enormous Meares Glacier as your backdrop. You might see Arctic terns and bald eagles or perhaps harbor seals resting on icebergs. If you wish to go a little further and faster into glacier country, explore with a guide by skiff. This is wilderness at its wildest. Feel the mountains closing in as you cruise through Esther Passage. Today you will also have the chance to view a fish hatchery and learn about Alaska’s salmon species. Tonight, join your expedition leader for an interpretive presentation before a relaxing soak in the hot tub under the fading sun. B L D

Day 7

College Fjord & Barry Arm

Today is your final full day exploring this remarkable region, and it is a day for grand finale’s – big mountains and big ice as you wind down your adventure in the company of all that is quintessentially Alaska. You might see sea otters floating on their backs on beds of kelp. Take it all in from a kayak or skiff before capping off your week with a celebratory Farewell Dinner and slideshow. B L D

Day 8

Whittier Disembarkation

Enjoy one last breakfast before your coach transfer from Whittier along Turnagain Arm back to Anchorage airport. Tour ends. B
