Scuba diving and snorkelling are exceptional here, with the region harbouring whales, dolphins, huge schools of tropical fish and Africa’s only population of dugong.

To preserve the resort’s atmosphere of seclusion and exclusivity, andBeyond Benguerra Island offers just 10 casitas, 2 cabanas and a three-bedroom house set in its own garden designed to accommodate families. Cool, airy and undeniably chic, each of these structures feature high ceilings, large shuttered windows and expansive timber decks with private plunge pools. Bathrooms contain oversized tubs, whilst guests can fall asleep either in generous canopied beds or in hammocks strung up in every unit.

andBeyond Benguerra Island’s evocative bar is inspired by a traditional sailboat known as a dhow, whilst dining takes place beneath shady, swaying palms with the ocean mere metres away. Swim in the sparkling central pool, go on a diving or snorkelling excursion, kayak the deep blue waters, go horseback riding along the beach or sail by dhow to a deserted sandbar – your options for exploring your surrounds are limited only by your imagination.

Guests can fly from Johannesburg, South Africa or from Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport to Vilanculos airport in Mozambique where they are met and transferred by helicopter to andBeyond Benguerra Island.

For centuries, Mozambique’s Indian Ocean coast was an important trading route and a melting pot of Arabic, Indian, African, Chinese and Portuguese peoples, creating a fascinating and rich culture.

What is the climate in Mozambique?
The islands can be visited throughout the year. October to March is hot and humid with some rain, whilst May to October is dry with warm days (average 27°C) and cooler nights.

What can I combine Mozambique with?
Mainland Mozambique, the Bazaruto and Benguerra islands can be combined with a safari in Southern Africa. The north coast of Mozambique is very close to Tanzania and can be reached from Dar es Salaam thus combines conveniently with an East African safari.

How to get to Mozambique
Mozambique is easily accessed by air from Johannesburg. The Bazaruto Archipelago is reached by light aircraft or helicopter from Vilanculos. A network of air charters links Maputo (the capital) with the north coast, which can also be reached from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.
