Accommodation on a Classic Safari can vary from a permanent lodge to a semi-permanent camp which moves with the seasons or with game migrations. Guests usually stay in a large, tented or thatched suite elevated on a timber plinth, with private ensuite bathroom containing modern western-style facilities or a bucket (hot water) shower and bush toilet. Suites are typically furnished with comfortable chairs, tables and a proper bed, and commonly have a viewing deck overlooking the wild surroundings. Classic Safari camps generally comprise of 10-20 guest tents, with a central dining, bar and lounge area for convivial, often buffet-style meals where guests can swap stories about their safari adventures.
Expect morning and afternoon game drives led by expert guides, whilst some camps on private concessions may also offer guided walks or night drives. Many classic safaris also feature properties with a library, swimming pool and possibly even a gym to keep guests occupied on warm afternoons.
Transportation between the different camps or lodges is by road, scheduled flight, charter flight or a combination of all three – this often depends on the region. Flights are generally more comfortable, provide a birds’ eye view of the landscape and minimise travel times. By contrast, driving is cheaper as well as a good way to see the country up close and meet the locals.
