Angama Mara

Suspended between the famous grasslands of the Masai Mara and the wide Kenyan skies, this architect designed lodge is built on the Rift Valley Escarpment with breathtaking views.

In fact the name Angama Mara is inspired by the Swahili word for “suspended in mid-air”. With a modern, award-winning design, this remarkable lodge is made up of two camps – North and South – that follow on the edge the escarpment. Each camp has 15 suites and its own guest area, kitchen and dedicated staff.

Every luxury guest suite is identical, with canvas walls and roof, as well as 11m of clear glass that runs across the front offering incredible views of the landscape below. Contemporary in style they offer over 100 m2 of space, with glass sliding doors to a spacious outdoor deck with scenic views, and meshed doors to let the outside in. The suites feature polished parquet floors, king beds, a screened bath and shower area, separate w/c, sitting area, writing desk, drinks cabinet, WiFi, and a butler’s lobby. There are 4 sets of interconnecting tents which are ideal for families. Children aged 6 and above are welcome.

Each camp has its own beautiful Guest Area with stunning architectural features. The large open plan bar, dining and lounge spaces are surrounded by folding glass doors opening out to an expansive outdoor deck with aerial views over the Masai Mara. The wide deck is a wonderful outdoor dining space for breakfasts, lunches and evening drinks around the sunken fire pit. There is even a telescope for spotting game on the plains below. Inside, a secluded library room of warm brick is perfect for private dining.

Between the two camps is the Pavilion, housing an outdoor pool (12 m x 6 m), fitness room, a safari shop featuring locally made crafts and a bead room where local ladies create bespoke items. Keen photographer’s will love the Photographic Studio, and private tutorials with the on-site wildlife photographer are available. Cameras, lenses and special kit are also available to hire.

One of the most popular areas with guests is the “shamba”, a kitchen garden brimming with vegetables, fruit trees, herbs and flowers used in the lodge kitchens. It is also a lovely place to linger and breathe in the aromas, or enjoy an al fresco lunch made specially by the chefs using ingredients directly from the garden.

A range of activities are offered by the lodge which has direct access to one of the best parts of the Maasai Mara, the Mara Triangle. This vast area is visited by fewer vehicles and offers excellent wildlife viewing throughout the year. Guided safaris by open 4WD vehicle are conducted down on the grasslands of the Masai Mara, a 20 minute drive down the escarpment. Morning and afternoon, as well as full-day excursions are available. Hot air ballooning is a very popular, and other activities can be arranged including cultural village visits and guided walks through the forests on the escarpment.

Angama Mara also has a romantic Out of Africa style safari camp situated deep in the Maasai Mara. With accommodation up to eight guests in ensuite tents the camp is for exclusive use only.

The founders and owners of Angama Mara believe in making a meaningful and sustainable difference to the communities, wildlife and landscape that surround it. Each guest contributes a US$10 per night donation to the Angama Foundation.

Angama Mara is serviced by a private airfield just 5 minutes drive away on top of the escarpment.
